Here's something that came out in Shunkan Bunshun last month.

SMAP's popularity is on the decline. For many years they were called national idols and anything they appeared in would get massive ratings, but all that is beginning to collapse. Their drama ratings have fallen and their show SMAPxSMAP, which at one point was pulling in over 30%, is now closer to 10 (whatev, SMAPxSMAP is good shit). TV stations are now focusing more on Arashi. Furthermore, all of this will have an impact on who will be succeeding the throne to Johnny's Jimusho.

Having realized SMAP just aren't what they used to be, TV stations have started putting their feelers out to find another talent to replace them. However, their reliance on Johnny's hasn't changed. A showbiz insider said,"Their interest has shifted from SMAP to Arashi. Back in August after Arashi's Kokuritsu concert, they had a big party at a hotel where Fuji and NTV executives greeted them - something unthinkable back in SMAP's heyday."
INCONCEIVABLE!

Apparently the whole SMAP situation is having an effect on who will be successor to Johnny's Jimusho, something TV stations are keeping their eyes on. "Right now it's beetween Iijima Michi, who has been managing SMAP, and Fujishima Julie Keiko, daughter of Vice President Mary Kitagawa.

Due to her association with SMAP people are turning their backs on Iijima as well. "Recently Johnny drunkenly said to a TV show staffer, 'Are you with Iijima? Or Julie? All the stations should drop Iijima and go with Julie.'"

Well, whatever Johnny says probably goes and there doesn't seem to be anything stopping Arashi right now. But if they take SMAPxSMAP away from me, I'ma hafta cut a bitch.

Whatever happens, all future Johnny's groups can only be compared to SMAP.

It made me wonder how the company will be if johnny dies? A major split between the two name mentioned above?

i believe that as long as KimuTaku is in SMAP, they will survive(ei, i also like nakai :D)...they may not be as famous as before but it doesn't mean they're shining days are over...i thought johny's sister doesn't have child...so maybe she will succeed the company?^_^

well even if SMAP popularity decline, they already a legend and it almost impossible to break their record over this years...
they are indeed the most successful group in Asia^.^

but yeah amongst the other JE group Arashi is the only group that have the potential to catch SMAP fame and they all still young though no one can ever beat Kimutaku achievement XDD

Seriously, it'd take much more than Arashi's currently doing to even be close to SMAP's greatness. ♥
The day Jun compares in awesomeness and popularity to KimuTaku... I don't see that happening anytime soon.

Not that he (Jun) has any intention to, even if he constantly moves/acts like him (along with dozens of other kouhai). On the contrary, it was Nino who said that he "wants to be the second KimuTaku."

Arashi is more popular as a group than individuals. And it was stated somewhere that Yamapi is the next KimuTaku in terms of popularity.

So you need not worry, no one is going to dethrone the king anytime soon.

i can't help thinking that with Johnny's influence, if he wanted her gone she would be gone already

Wat. If Arashi had to cut down to only 27 singles per year for SMAPxSMAP to stay on the air, I think I'd be fine with that.

SMAP has been at the top for a long time, and even if the number of fans are declining somewhat, it'll take more than that for Arashi to outdo them. Maybe in the long run, Arashi will match them, but I doubt SMAP will ever be truly surpassed.

Besides, with their 10th anniversary, Arashi is everywhere at the moment anyway, so an increase in their numbers is understandable. They're climbing sharply now, but I don't think it'll continue to do so at this level indefinitly.

That said, I think that a story like this might actually backfire on Arashi. Which would be a shame really, as it's not like they have proclaimed themselves the next coming of SMAP or Christ or whatever.

fact is that smap's overall popularity is attributed to kimura takuya more than anything else. it's like news have yamashita tomohisa and to some extent nishikido ryo (admit it, he's promoted more as news than kanjani8), and kat-tun has kamenashi kazuya and akanishi jin.

and that's why it's different for arashi. because arashi is aiba masaki, matsumuto jun, ninomiya kazunari, ohno satoshi, and sakurai sho. each one of them made a name for themselves as a group and as individuals. arashi don't need to surpass smap's legend because they're making one all of their own.

Very well said!! Arashi is unique in its own ways and truly different from the rest like you mentioned (about how they have this "frontman" who raises the group's popularity)

"arashi don't need to surpass smap's legend because they're making one all of their own."

As much as I love and support Arashi, I do not really want them to go down the SMAP-road. But who are we as fans to have any say in the decisions made by J&A and the companies because the bottomline is everything is still business, they want the current IT-things that sells and Arashi is so much another pawn/product to be used. I just hope the pressure would not be so overwhelming for them and we can only wait and watch to see how things go.

As much as I love Arashi, I believe SMAP will always be there. They are the one who set the standard. It's been more than 20 years and they are still big name. For variety shows, as far as I know VS Arashi is Arashi's most successful one in term of rating and with golden time, this show will be like "TFP II" in TBS, it will be used to promote dramas in Fuji TV. But their other shows? Still none of them can beat SMAPxSMAP or Utaban.

Besides, SMAP's dramas are still doing fine. MR Brain and Ninkyo Helper are more successful one if we compared with SMILE and The Quiz Show in term of rating. So, I doubt TV stations didn't want SMAP anymore.

People say, it's impossible to have two kings in one kingdom. Perhaps this is what happened.

BUT Arashi is not a king. They are Princes, still learning the ropes and the King hasn't died yet. The Prince would love to roam the kingdom and woo the maidens still, drinking ale and be merry.

Admittedly, they aren't pulling in stellar ratings like they used to--then again, it's hard for most shows to get over 20% these days. They're still doing pretty well, it's just that their projects are varying more between hit and miss. SMAPxSMAP's ratings currently waver between high and low teens but is still the highest rated among Johnny shows, so we don't have to worry about it being canceled any time soon. ^^

For a group whose popularity is on the decline, they sure keep on making their marks. In 2009 alone I can think of four firsts/records they've achieved individually and as a group.

Though I support arashi with all my heart (lol moronic fangirl alert) I believe no one can ever replace SMAP. Like what everyone says, SMAP's legend and success is one of a kind. Arashi will create something of their own (:

As for who leads the popularity "contest".. for some reason, I'll feel pretty sad if SMAP does "go down" but at the same time I guess it's the reality of showbiz..

what a bizarre article. idk i mean even if you accept that japan is incapable of acknowledging more than one boyband at a time, it's hard to imagine the nikkei ever plunging because ohno satoshi couldn't keep his pants on after a couple of drinks.

As much as SMAP should be admired, it has to be admitted that they are getting old, which means their fanbase is getting old. SMAP can't and won't stay idols that appeal to all ages and generations. Having said that, I agree that the bar that SMAP has set is way too high for any other group to surpass, at least with the current era of groups. Arashi appear to finally be coming into their peak at the moment and have spread themselves out in a way that is similar to SMAP, but I think Arashi's management have got to figure out a way for Arashi to carve out their own kind of space.

It's true a lot of things have changed from when SMAP were at their peak compared to today. Ratings (especially noticeable this year ><) have taken a nosedive, there are a lot more groups to compete with, and the level that is considered to be major achievement for a JE group is a lot higher. Fans have a whole lot to choose from. It's kind of impossible to draw comparisons because things are so different.

In the end I would probably want Iijima to win out. But somehow, I think family comes first right? Julie definitely seems to have a lot of buying power...

SMAPxSMAP is some funny stuff and even if the ratings are going down I don't think they will cancel the show anytime soon. Arashi is in their 10th year and of course they are popular. I hope they can both continue to rise in popularity. :)

On another note I want to watch The Princess Bride now.

i personally don't want to see the two groups being compared. it's actually because of SMAP that aiba-chan joined the jimusho. arashi highly respects SMAP and even if arashi may be gaining more attention now, i don't think that is to get SMAP out of the limelight.

SMAP have their own fans, so has arashi. and whatever others may say, SMAP has already made their name; has already placed their mark in history.

as an arashi fan, i highly respect SMAP as well, knowing that arashi respects their senpais, as with the other members of JE.

who ever wrote this article is a douche bag... totally. Why compare SMAP and Arashi? they are both from the same jimusho and both respect each other. They have their own paths to take and they also have their own accomplishments they achieved with their own will power and determination.

GOSH! they are respected by their kouhais as the same way arashi respect SMAP and other groups that debuted before them. Both of the groups have an elite within their members, jun with arashi and nakai with smap. So what if they sing nasally at least they can sing out a tune. Jun is getting better when it comes to sing... and nakai is getting there. KimuTaku can never be replaced because of his acting and stuff.

What im trying to say here is, arashi and smap are both groups that get along well together. So why, we/us fans, bash each other just because of this shitty article written by someone who wanted to break J&A apart and us fans to fight our heads off?

(Anonymous) wrote:

I agree with you.
As to those fans jumping on each opportunity (even with unrelated articles) to criticize how a particular idol sings or acts while claiming to be a fan of the group, they are way more ridiculous than the off-key singer.
